On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century

Venue: Offsite

Location: 36 Battery Place

Date: Thu, Mar 30, 2017, 7 pm

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Timothy Snyder, one of the most celebrated historians of the Holocaust and author of Bloodlands, Black Earth and now On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, dissects the events and values that enabled the rise of Hitler and Stalin and the implementation of their catastrophic policies and draws from the darkest hours of the twentieth century to provide hope for the twenty-first.
